being strapped to a rocket sled on multiple occasions and being accelerated to over 1000 km/h at a rate of over 500 g's per second with peak G forces of over 40 G's.
He did multiple tests in attempt to develop safer pilot ejection systems and restraints. All of this was done with 1950's safety technology.
Amazingly he did not suffer any permanent physical damage (only temporary blindness and bruises and cracked ribs) and went on to work with the NHTSA an help implement standards for seatbelts and airbags in cars.
And I thought top fuel dragsters were crazy.
